Course overview

What you'll learn

This course equips managers and executives to frame AI opportunities, prioritise use cases, manage risk, and lead change responsibly. You work with practical frameworks, a governance template, and an evaluation plan using examples from your own organisation. The focus is on sound decisions rather than technical build skills.

Who it's for

Leaders, Entrepreneurs

By the end you will be able to

  • Describe current AI capabilities and limits to a non-technical board or team in plain language
  • Score and rank at least eight use cases using a documented value, feasibility, and risk framework
  • Complete a risk register covering privacy, accuracy, bias, security, vendor, and legal risks with named owners
  • Draft an AI acceptable-use policy and approval process suited to your organisation
  • Create a stakeholder and change-management plan that addresses concerns, training, and communication
  • Define evaluation criteria, success measures, and stop conditions for a pilot

Industry use cases

Examples from the work you do

Healthcare administration

Evaluate AI for scheduling communications and documentation support, with strict rules on patient data, human review, and vendor privacy terms.

Finance and insurance

Assess AI for summarising policy documents and drafting client communications, with model-risk review, audit trails, and explainability requirements.

Manufacturing

Prioritise AI uses in maintenance documentation, quality reporting, and procurement analysis, and define who approves changes to procedures.

Logistics and supply chain

Compare AI support for exception reporting and customer status updates, and set escalation rules when outputs affect deliveries.

Education

Draft an institution-level AI policy covering staff use, student use, assessment integrity, and data protection.

Nonprofits and public services

Plan AI support for grant writing and case-note summaries with consent, equity review, and transparency to the people served.

Syllabus

6 modules, 14 hours.

Every module ends with a hands-on lab you can apply to your own work.

01AI Capabilities, Limits, and the Leadership Role2 hours

Develop a grounded view of what AI can do today and what leaders must own.

  • Generative AI, predictive models, and automation: key differences
  • Strengths and failure modes: hallucination, bias, inconsistency
  • Hands-on comparison of assistants on a leadership task
  • Separating vendor claims from evidence
  • Accountability: what cannot be delegated to a tool

Hands-on lab: Run a briefing task in two assistants, assess the accuracy of each, and write a short note on what you would trust and what you would check.

02Opportunity Framing and Use-Case Prioritisation2 hours

Turn broad interest in AI into a ranked portfolio of well-defined use cases.

  • Mapping value chains and pain points
  • Defining a use case: problem, users, data, output, owner
  • Scoring value, feasibility, data readiness, and risk
  • Quick wins versus strategic bets
  • Build, buy, or use existing tools
  • Avoiding solutions in search of a problem

Hands-on lab: Score eight use cases from your organisation in a shared sheet and defend your top three in a live review.

03Risk, Privacy, and Responsible AI2.5 hours

Identify and manage the main risks of AI use before they become incidents.

  • Privacy and confidential data: what may enter which tools
  • Accuracy, hallucination, and consequences of unchecked output
  • Bias and fairness in decisions affecting people
  • Security, shadow AI use, and vendor due diligence
  • Intellectual property and contractual terms
  • Human-in-the-loop design for consequential decisions

Hands-on lab: Build a risk register for your top use case, assigning likelihood, impact, controls, and an accountable owner to each risk.

04Governance, Policy, and Compliance2.5 hours

Create practical governance that enables safe use rather than blocking it.

  • Roles and decision rights: sponsor, owner, reviewer, approver
  • Acceptable-use policy contents and tiers of risk
  • Approval workflow for new tools and use cases
  • Awareness of relevant regulation and when to seek legal advice
  • Documentation, audit trails, and incident reporting
  • Reviewing policy on a regular schedule

Hands-on lab: Draft a two-page acceptable-use policy and approval flow, then test it against three realistic scenarios from your sector.

05Adoption, People, and Change Management2.5 hours

Plan the human side of adoption: trust, skills, roles, and communication.

  • Common barriers: fear, unclear value, skills gaps, workload
  • Stakeholder mapping and communication planning
  • Training and support models for different roles
  • Effects on roles and work design, handled transparently
  • Building champions and feedback channels
  • Fairness and inclusion in access to tools and training

Hands-on lab: Create a stakeholder map and a ninety-day communication and training plan for your pilot.

06Evaluation, Vendor Choice, and Strategy Roadmap2.5 hours

Design evidence-based pilots, judge tools and vendors with clear criteria, and sequence your roadmap for presentation.

  • Baselines, success measures, and quality criteria
  • Pilot design: scope, duration, sample, and stop rules
  • Measuring quality, time, error rates, and user experience
  • Vendor evaluation questions on data use, security, and support
  • Total cost of ownership beyond licence fees
  • Deciding to scale, adjust, or stop

Hands-on lab: Write an evaluation plan with a vendor question list for your pilot, then present your roadmap live to a peer acting as a sceptical board member and revise it.

Capstone project

Build something you'll use

Produce an AI strategy brief for your own organisation or team. Include a prioritised use-case portfolio, a risk register, a draft acceptable-use policy, a change-management plan, and a pilot evaluation plan with stop conditions. Present it live to the cohort and incorporate their feedback into a final version.
