Course overview
RAG and Vector Search Systems covers the full path from raw documents to grounded answers. You work with embeddings, chunking strategies, and vector databases, then add hybrid search and reranking to improve relevance. The course closes with evaluation methods and the production concerns that decide whether a RAG system stays useful over time.

Industry use cases
Answer analyst questions over policy and regulatory documents with cited passages and access controls on sensitive sources.
Search internal clinical guidelines and device manuals, returning source references so staff can verify every answer.
Combine keyword and semantic search over a product catalog and measure whether results improve for long, descriptive queries.
Power a support assistant that retrieves from documentation and past tickets, with freshness handling when docs change.
Index equipment manuals and maintenance logs so technicians can query procedures in natural language.
Retrieve network runbooks and incident histories to help engineers diagnose recurring faults faster.
Syllabus
Every module ends with a hands-on lab you can apply to your own work.
Understand why retrieval is used with language models and how embeddings make semantic search possible.
Hands-on lab: Embed a small document set with a hosted and an open model, run the same ten queries against both, and compare the top results by hand.
Turn messy real-world documents into chunks that retrieve well.
Hands-on lab: Ingest a mixed PDF and HTML corpus with two chunking strategies and compare retrieval of ten reference questions under each.
Work hands-on with the main options for storing and querying vectors and learn how to choose among them.
Hands-on lab: Load the same embedded corpus into pgvector, Qdrant, and Pinecone, run identical filtered queries, and record setup effort, latency, and result differences.
Improve relevance by combining lexical and semantic signals and reordering candidates.
Hands-on lab: Add BM25 and a reranker to your baseline retriever and measure the change in recall and latency on a fixed query set.
Build the answer-generation step so responses stay grounded in retrieved content.
Hands-on lab: Build an answering service that returns citations, refuses when evidence is missing, and handles a follow-up question using conversation history.
Measure retrieval and generation separately so you know what to fix.
Hands-on lab: Create a 30-question evaluation set, score your pipeline with retrieval metrics and Ragas, and write a failure analysis with the top three fixes.
Prepare a RAG system for real users, changing data, and real constraints.
Hands-on lab: Add per-user access filters and an update job to your system, then test that a restricted document never appears for an unauthorized user.
Capstone project
Build and present a RAG system over a document collection of your choice: include a documented ingestion and chunking approach, a vector store with hybrid search and reranking, citation-based answers, an evaluation report with retrieval and generation metrics, and a short plan for freshness and access control in production.
